Brief History of Bhola District and Sessions Judge Court
History of Bhola District:
Bhola district is a traditional town in the southern part of Bangladesh. The district has a glorious and varied history since ancient times. Bhola is the largest ancient Gangetic delta in Bangladesh. Bhola was recognized as a district in 1984. Earlier it was a sub division under Noakhali district. Then its administrative center was in the present Daulatkhane. In 1869 Barisal was added as a subdivision under the district. Later in 1876 the administrative center shifted from Daulatkhan to Bhola. At present Bhola district has 7 upazilas and 70 unions. There is a local story behind the naming of Bhola. The Betua Canal, which runs through Bhola town, was once known as the Betua River. Kheya used to cross the river with the help of boats. A very old sailor used to ferry people with the help of a boat. His name was Bhola Ghazi Pat Ni. Today's yogi had his abode near Ghol. Bhola was once named after this Bhola Ghazi.
Bhola Court History:
Daulatkhan Sub-division was established in 1845 during the first half of British rule. In 1877, after the Mahakuma headquarters were shifted from Daulatkhan, the court was established in the former Sub-Registry Office house by appointing two Munsefs. Courts filled with lawyers, new cities were built. Later in 1984 after Bhola District was declared, Judge Court was established here.
District and Sessions Judge Court: The first District and Sessions Judge of Bhola District was Mr. SM Abdus Samad. Mr. Md. Mohsinul Haque is currently serving as District and Sessions Judge.
Magistrate's Court: The Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court, Bhola was established on 1st November 2007. The first Chief Judicial Magistrate was Pramar Chandra Biswas. The present Chief Judicial Magistrate is Mr. Sharif Md. Sanaul Haque.
Women and Child Abuse Prevention Tribunal: There is a Women and Child Abuse Prevention Tribunal in Bhola district. It was established in 2018. Presently Mr. Nurul Alam Md is engaged as Judge of Nipu (Knowledgeable District and Sessions Judge).
Chowki Courts: There are two Chowki Courts in Bhola district. One is Charfashion upazila; The other is in Manpura Upazila. Charfashion Chowki Court was established in 2010 and Manpura Chowki Court in 1984. Charfashion Chowki has 4 courts- an Additional District and Sessions Judge Court, a Joint District and Sessions Judge Court, a Senior Assistant Judge Court and a Senior Judicial Magistrate Court. Manpura Chowki has a Senior Judicial Magistrate Court.
District Legal Aid Office: There is a District Legal Aid Office in Bhola district. Presently Mr. Sabbir Md. Khalid (Assistant Judge) is serving as District Legal Aid Officer.
Court Infrastructure:
Bhola District and Sessions Judge Court is a three storied building. The work of the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court building is in progress. There is a Drishti Nandan Pond between the District and Sessions Judge Court and the under-construction Chief Judicial Magistrate Court.
Bhola District Bar Association:
Bhola District Bar Association is a traditional bar of Bangladesh. Bhola Lawyers Association was founded in 1888 with 9 lawyers. In 1903, the activities of the association started in its own tin house on the present day Gazipur Road. The first Muslim lawyer of Bhola bar was Mr. Hutton Ari Munshi and the first Hindu lawyer was Mr. Rajni Nath Kar. The present President of Bhola Bar Mr. Alhaj Faridur Rahman Mia and General Secretary Mr. Md. Mahabubul Haque Litu. Charfashion also has a separate bar association. The current president of the said bar is Mr. Md. Ramiz Uddin and the general secretary is Mr. Md. Mozzammel Haque.
